Step 01: Planning, Drawing, Likeness

The workflow of alla prima painting is divided into five parts. You can practice them all at once, or you can focus on each part as a short exercise and paint this portrait over multiple sessions.

We’re starting our practice with one of the most traditional approaches to blocking in. This method is especially useful in chiaroscuro setups, where a dark background helps emphasize the luminous quality of the skin. It’s always a solid choice when you want to establish the composition right from the start.
