04 Block-in Exercise (15 minutes)
Day 02:
The way we apply the first layer is crucial in alla prima painting. The surface should be smooth enough for the paint to flow, but not so tacky or slippery that the underpainting fails to adhere properly or takes too long to dry.
In this exercise, we focus on creating simplified shapes with average tonal values, softening them to ensure they are thin and evenly covered. We then apply a darker, thicker mixture on top of the average value to add depth, while maintaining the simplicity and cohesion of the shapes.
